Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has officially launched its latest flagship model, Grok 3, which he claims is the “smartest on Earth.”
The billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX introduced the new AI model on Feb 18th, making it available for iOS and web users.
According to Musk, Grok 3 features 10 times the computing power of its predecessor, positioning it as a significant leap in AI capabilities, reports The Independent.
Grok 3 has been in development for several months and was originally scheduled for a 2024 release, though it faced delays. To train the model, xAI has been building a massive data center in Memphis with over 200,000 GPUs dedicated to the project.
Musk also revealed that Grok 3’s training data includes court cases, which, he claims, enables it to generate “extremely compelling legal verdicts.”
“Grok 3 is an order of magnitude more capable than Grok 2… It is a maximally truth-seeking AI, even if that truth is sometimes at odds with what is politically correct,” Musk stated during the live-streamed launch event.
Grok 3 Outperforming GPT-4o?
According to xAI, Grok 3 surpasses OpenAI’s GPT-4o on several key benchmarks, including the AIME test (which evaluates AI math performance) and GPQA (which assesses physics, biology, and chemistry problem-solving skills).
For now, Grok 3 is available to Premium+ subscribers on X (formerly Twitter), with xAI also introducing a new subscription tier called SuperGrok for mobile app and Grok.com users.
New Features & Open-Source Plans
Users can engage with different modes of Grok 3:
- “Think” mode for general chatbot interactions
- “Big Brain” mode for complex queries requiring more computing power
Additionally, xAI introduced DeepSearch, a feature designed to scan the internet and Musk’s X platform for real-time information, providing users with summarized responses. A voice mode is also in development.
Musk confirmed that Grok 2 will be open-sourced once Grok 3 is stable, a process expected to take a few months.
“Our general approach is to open-source the last version when the next version is fully out,” he stated.
Grok 3 is the latest AI model from xAI, a company Musk founded after cutting ties with OpenAI, alleging that the organization had strayed from its original mission. With Grok 3 now challenging GPT-4o on benchmarks, the AI rivalry between Musk and OpenAI appears to be heating up.
