OpenAI has announced plans to integrate Sora into ChatGPT for video generation, marking a significant upgrade to its flagship AI chatbot.
In early 2024, OpenAI introduced Sora, its first AI-powered text-to-video generator. After months of development, a stable version was finally launched in December 2024. Sora has been generating significant interest in the AI space, and OpenAI is looking to expand its reach.
The company has extended Sora’s availability to users in the UK and the European Union, according to Android Headlines.
With this expansion, the next logical step appears to be integrating the technology into ChatGPT, making video generation even more accessible to users.
AI-Powered Video Generation in ChatGPT
Rohan Sahai, OpenAI’s product lead for Sora, confirmed that the company is actively working on enabling ChatGPT users to access Sora’s features without leaving the chatbot.
“We want ChatGPT users to access Sora’s features without leaving the chatbot,” Sahai stated.
This move could make ChatGPT an even more powerful tool, attracting new users and potentially increasing subscriptions to OpenAI’s paid plans.
Currently, Sora can generate video clips of up to 20 seconds, and premium subscriptions may extend this limit. Initially, OpenAI marketed Sora as a tool for creatives and production studios.
However, the company now aims to make it appealing to the general public. Despite the integration, users may still need to access the web app to use all advanced features.
Sahai cautioned that the ChatGPT-integrated version of Sora may offer fewer customization options but emphasized that the ability to quickly generate video clips from a simple prompt would be a valuable addition.
What to Expect from Sora’s Integration into ChatGPT
The Sora web app already allows users to edit and merge multiple video sequences, but its integration into ChatGPT may focus solely on video generation.
OpenAI has been careful to maintain ChatGPT’s accessibility, and Sahai noted that keeping Sora as a separate product initially was a strategic decision to avoid complicating the chatbot’s interface.
Sahai also revealed additional developments regarding Sora’s evolution. OpenAI is considering launching a mobile app to broaden access to its AI-powered video generation tool. In fact, the company is actively hiring mobile engineers to kickstart the project.
Another exciting aspect is OpenAI’s plan to expand Sora’s functionality beyond video.
“We want the Sora AI model to generate both videos and images,” Sahai confirmed. While ChatGPT currently offers image generation via the DALL-E 3 model, Sora could take photorealism in generated images to a new level.
What’s Next?
Meanwhile, OpenAI continues to refine Sora Turbo, the model powering the Sora web app.
An improved version is already in development, though no official release date has been announced.
The integration of Sora into ChatGPT and the launch of a mobile app will likely take time, but these advancements highlight OpenAI’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI-driven creativity.
